Summary: 'It was during the winter when Wolverine had told her that there was nothing like having nothing but the open road in front of you.' Rogue/Wolverine, Rogue/Gambit. Done for [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000

It was during the winter when Wolverine had told her that there was nothing like having nothing but the open road in front of you. He had done it enough times that now; it didn’t matter where he was, as long as he was there. He had also mentioned that he thought everyone should have that moment in their lives at least once. If Rogue hadn’t been drunk at the time, she would have seen right through his feeble attempt at inviting her to go with him. She would have said yes too, without a second thought to anything.

However, she had been drunk, because out of all the adults she knew, Wolverine was not the most responsible one. If she hadn’t been throwing up seconds later, she would have found it funny that he was the one that she trusted the most too.

Rogue was used to Wolverine coming and going, because he always seemed to leave during the spring. His trips became longer and more frequent after Jean died- she just assumed that he couldn’t take the constant reminders of her, where as Scott seemed to need them.

After awhile, not missing him became easier. She didn’t have the time anymore- between studying for school, being a member of the X-Men, and trying to avoid Gambit’s constant flirting, she barely had time to think about him, let alone miss him.

It’s when she lets her guard down that her hand automatically goes to her neck, searching for what she knows is no longer there.
::::

It’s during the summer that Gambit first kissed her.

She had been talking with Jubilee at the time, about something that was only important to Jubilee (Wolverine had called the night before, and that familiar ache was back- she missed him more when he reminded her of his existence.) Gambit had appeared out of nowhere, slid his arms around her, and kissed her.

Seconds later, her powers kicked in, and he was knocked unconscious, and didn’t wake up until three days later.

“What the hell were you thinking?” she asked, standing over him in the infirmary, both hands on her hips.

“Was worth it,” he said, somehow managing to grin at her. Rogue wanted to pull out her hair in frustration.

The next day, he asked her to out to dinner. She said yes.
::::

Autumn was when the first postcard showed up. Bobby had flung it into her room- he still wasn’t speaking to either her or Gambit- and she barely managed to catch it. She shook her head- Rogue was sure that some people in the mansion just weren’t right in the head.

The post card was simple- the picture not memorable, but the messy scrawl on the back of it made her smile. ‘Miss you- L.’

She hid it away in her drawer, but Rogue was smiling for the rest of the day.

Winter had been her favorite season for many reasons, but now, it was because it meant that Wolverine would be home soon. She was anticipating, and on edge.

Gambit was beginning to wonder what the hell was wrong with her, but anyone who had known Rogue since the day that she arrived at the mansion what she was waiting for- it was always the same thing.

Scott thought it was a little sad, but he would never say it to her. instead, he watched as weeks went by, and not a word from Wolverine. She became sullen and downright rude, and prone to wearing leather jackets more often than not.

It was in January when a letter came. She opened it right in the doorway, uncaring of the fact that Gambit was reading over her shoulder. She stared a the picture for a second- it took her a few moments to notice that the sign said whoa instead of stop- she had been too busy looking at the snow covered mountains and houses in the distance. It looked like Logan had taken it himself.

She pulled out the actual letter- it was short and to the point, like Wolverine himself was.

Come with me was all it said, and it made her laugh.

“Chere?”

Rogue turned around, and without warning, hugged him tightly. She kissed his cheek, giving him a sad smile. “I’m sorry Remy.”

There’s a train ticket in the envelope.

Logan is waiting on the porch of one of the nicer cabins in the area, smoking a cigar. He doesn’t turn to look at her, but she knew that he was aware of her presence.

“You’re late, darling,” he said.

Rogue set her bag on the top of the steps, before taking a stand next to him. “I’m the late one? You stood me up, jerk,” she teased, bumping her shoulder affectionately with his.

“I invited you here over a month ago,” he replied, but he was smiling.

“Well, I was drunk. I don’t think that counts,” Rogue told him, and that was when he turned around to face her.

“Hey,” he whispered.

“Hi,” she said, and he pulled her into a lose embrace. Rogue sighed, and buried her face in his shoulder.

“Cyclops told me that you have a boyfriend. He actually let you leave?”

“I kind of broke up with him. Gambit’s a good guy, but… he keeps touching me like he’s got something to prove. I came because… you don’t. You’re not afraid of me.”

“Ain’t nothing to be scared of. You’re like a toothpick,” he joked, and she pulled away to hit him on the arm. He grabbed it gently, holding her elbow in a loose grasp.

“Stay a while,” he said.

“Why? We running’ again?” Rogue asked cheekily.

He moved his hand down, finally taking her gloved hands in his, “Hard to run if we’re only in one place.”

“If anyone could manage it Logan, it would be you,” she shot back.

“Don’t have anything to run from this time,” he admitted gruffily, looking down.

Rogue smiled.

This was so nice, I really heard their voices in my head. I've always loved the idea of the two of them together.
