Fandom: James Bond films
Spoilers: none
Author's Notes: When I got my assignment, I immediately thought of James Bond - there was just something about the image that brought the character to my mind. Now, to be clear, I've seen maybe three Bond films in my life, none of which I remember all that clearly, and have never read any of the books. So the story is more about my impression of what James Bond, the character (particularly as played by Daniel Craig), must be like at this point in his life and career than it is about proper canon. The Bond I've drawn here is a miserable mess: misogynistic, despairing, exhausted, and restless. The story accordingly features strong and demeaning language, violence (sexualized and not), and thoughts that at least verge on the suicidal. Please skip this story if any of those things will upset you. I'm rating it NC-17, though the only sex in the story occurs in memories and dreams.

Has your picture assignment left you feeling uninspired? Flummoxed about what it is, exactly? Confused about life in general?

Well, this is the place to get help with those first two things, at least!

Sometimes, just coming at things from a different perspective can help, and hopefully, one of your fellow participants or community viewers can get you moving down a more creative path! If you're struggling, comment here and elaborate on what it is that's causing your vexation: is your picture unsuited or anachronistic for your fandom? Do you feel the image is boring? Is the subject the source of a phobia for you (eek, sorry!)? Please include a link to your picture, too.

Please be mindful to respect the original photographers (in case they stumble over here), and also one another. We're all in this game together folks, and, besides, I'm not that great as a moderator. Don't make me be mean.

Here we go! This is the master list of all participants & their assigned photo. As with last year, each assignment is a link to a Flickr photo. Please be sure to refresh your knowledge of the challenge guidelines, as well.

If you signed up and your name isn't here, or if the photo you were assigned has been removed, please let me know ASAP and I'll fix it.

Assignments! )

Additional Resources:

For those of you who are new, or who've perhaps struggled with this challenge in the past (or people who just really like her), my friend and 11-time participant [livejournal.com profile] celli as composed a helpful post on how one can approach this challenge, including examples! Read it here Celli’s Completely Unofficial but Highly Encouraged (and Slightly Blackmailed) Guide to Not Making Yourself Nuts Doing picfor1000

I have also create a brainstorming post or this year's challenge. Folks who are feeling blocked/uninspired by their image can ask for help from their fellow participants there. Feel free to jump in and help each other out; it might even help to get your own creative juices flowing!

General Guidelines

  • As always, all stories must b exactly 1000 words, no more, no less1. Any fandom, pairing, rating or genre is welcome, including crossover, RPF or original fiction.

  • The photos are intended to serve as inspiration; the subject of your photo can appear in your story, as part of the title, or simply act as a starting point -- in other words photos need not be a literal part of the story! Feel free to gain inspiration from the title on the Flickr page, as well, or disregard it, as you choose. In short, just be creative and have fun! Again check out this post [livejournal.com profile] celli, or visit th brainstorming post f you need help.

  • If the muse strikes, you may write more than one story based on your photograph, but each must be a completely separate story of 1000 words. Your entry/entries can be part of series only only if each story can stand on its own.

  • All stories should be completed no later tha February 28, 2013. Participants may post their stories any time before that, in whatever forum they wish, but must at least post a link here in the community.

Community Guidelines

  • This is an open community, and all participants in the challenge should join it. Participants are expected to either post their entire story here (behind a cut-tag, obvs), or post a link to the story  here if it's posted elsewhere.

  • Please use the following header format when posting:
    Title:
    Author:
    Fandom:
    Spoilers
    (if any)
You may also include pairings, ratings, disclaimers, author's notes, etc., if you want, but those are not required.

  • If you include the picture with your story, i must e behind an lj-cut. Also, please heed any rights/restrictions for your assigned image before using or posting elsewhere, and give credit where it's due2.

  • Participants should tag their posts with both "challenge 11" and the appropriate fandom

If you have any further questions or issues with your image, please leave a comment on this post!

Good luck everyone, and thanks for playing!

1. We operate mostly on the honor system here, so you may use whatever method you like to count your words. As long as that method says you're at 1000 words exactly, you may consider yourself a #winner. (Disclaimer: winners do not receive a prize of any sort, beyond, you know... personal pride or whatever.)

2. Management is not responsible if the picture's owner comes at you, is what I'm saying. Follow rules, folks.

The 11th Annual 'A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words' Challenge: Group 11

So, It's Like This...

The challenge goes as follows: each participant is assigned a picture that will serve as the inspiration for a story (how you define "inspiration" is up to you). The catch is that each story must be exactly one thousand words in length, no more, no less - and trust me, it's not as easy as it sounds!

Everyone gets one picture to start. It's called a challenge for a reason, so you may need to get creative. Just remember: the picture itself need only serve as inspiration, not necessarily be a literal part of the story.

Any fandom, pairing, rating or genre (including real person and original fic) is welcome. Stories won't be due until February 28, 2013, which means two full months to write! Woot! :D

The Twist

Every year I add a theme to the challenge. This year, the theme is Group 11. As Wikipedia says, "A Group 11 element is one in the series of elements in group 11 in the periodic table, consisting of transition metals copper, silver, and gold." Each photo I assign will all include at least one of those colors/substances! And again, this need only serve as inspiration. Stories do not need to be explicitly about the photograph, and the subject does not need to appear in the story itself. Creativity!

Sign Me Up!

Ready to play? Comment here no later than Monday, December 31, 2012. SIGN-UPS CLOSED.

I will post assignments here in the comm on January 1, 2013, so you'll probably want to friend/bookmark the community, if you haven't already.

Please feel free to spread the word wherever you want. The more, the merrier, and everyone, in all fandoms, is welcome to play, and you don't need an LJ to participate! Tell your friends, pimp at will, etc.

If you have any further questions, don't comment in this post. Send me a private message or email me at slodwick@livejournal.com instead. Thanks!
